Firesafe Spotlight Messages

This fire season, were you prepared or lucky? Fire behavior is determined by fuel, weather, and topography. Of these, you can only influence the fuels on your property! The objective is to treat fuels so that when a wildfire burns, it is less severe and more easily suppressed. Sign up here for your FREE wildfire risk assessment to learn more.

Wildfire is a part of living in Montana. Learn more about how you can co-exist with wildfire by watching Living Safely with Wildfire. Also, learn about wildfire issues across the U.S. in a video published by Vox, Why Fire Season Doesn’t End. Remember, you do not have to live in a forest to be in a wildfire! Helena is a community at risk. Learn how city residents can become “wildfire ready” in Helena: A Community at Risk.

Spotlight Update: November 2025.

  • Did you notice that our website got a facelift?  We hope you find it easier to locate all of our resources! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help finding any information.
  • Have you considered “firescaping” ? Check out our new Firescaping Guide.
  • See our Fall 2025 Newsletter. Our next newsletter will come out January!
  • Don’t forget that ongoing maintenance is important at your home – keep those gutters clean, small trees cut, and trees pruned up.
  • Grass and shrubs burn too. While we often think about wildfire risk being elevated for homes located in the forest, don’t forget that grass and shrubs can also burn intensely. Our fuels specialists can give you advice about all vegetation in and around your home, including sagebrush and grassland ecosystems. You can also be at risk within city limits – embers can be thrown miles in advance of a fast-moving fire on a windy day.
